Leading by Example: My Journey as a Michigan Fitness Foundation Fitness Ambassador
Some opportunities leave a lasting impact not because of the recognition they bring, but because of the mission they represent.
In 2014, I had the privilege of being selected by the Michigan Fitness Foundation as a Michigan Fitness Ambassador, representing the importance of health, physical activity, and community wellness across the state of Michigan.
The featured photograph captures a memorable moment at the Pure Michigan Fitness Series during the annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Run. Standing alongside fellow Fitness Ambassadors, I was proud to help promote a statewide movement encouraging Michiganders to embrace healthier lifestyles through regular physical activity.
Representing a Mission of Health and Wellness
Being selected as a Michigan Fitness Ambassador was more than an honor. It was an opportunity to support a mission that aligns deeply with my personal and professional values.
The role represented a commitment to encouraging people of all ages to make physical activity a part of everyday life. It also highlighted the importance of preventive health, community engagement, and personal responsibility in building healthier lives.
For me, fitness has never been only about performance. It is about consistency, discipline, confidence, prevention, and long-term well-being.
Health Begins in the Community
As a physical therapist and public health professional, I have always believed that healthcare extends far beyond hospitals and clinics.
True health begins within our communities through education, prevention, movement, and empowering people to make healthier choices every day.
Clinical care is important, but community wellness plays an equally powerful role in improving quality of life. When people are encouraged to stay active, understand their health, and participate in wellness-focused activities, communities become stronger and more resilient.
The Mackinac Bridge Run Experience
The annual Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Run was a meaningful reminder of how fitness can bring people together.
Events like the Pure Michigan Fitness Series are not only about running or physical endurance. They are about participation, motivation, and shared commitment. They inspire individuals, families, and communities to take steps toward healthier living.
Standing at such an iconic Michigan landmark alongside others who shared the same mission made the experience even more memorable.
A Lifelong Commitment to Preventive Healthcare
Throughout my career, I have worked across clinical practice, public health, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Yet one principle has remained constant: health is one of our greatest investments.
Whether helping a patient take their first steps after an injury or encouraging an entire community to become more active, every effort matters.
Preventive healthcare is one of the most powerful tools we have. It helps reduce long-term health risks, improves quality of life, and gives individuals the confidence to take charge of their well-being.
Leadership Through Service
Looking back at this experience reminds me that leadership is about service.
Leadership is not only found in titles or positions. It is reflected in the willingness to support a cause, encourage others, and contribute to something larger than oneself.
Every walk, every race, every health conversation, and every community initiative has the potential to influence someone’s life in a positive way.
Lessons from the Fitness Ambassador Journey
This experience reinforced several important lessons that continue to guide my professional and personal journey:
- Health promotion must begin before illness occurs.
- Physical activity should be encouraged at every age.
- Community wellness requires education, access, and inspiration.
- Leadership becomes meaningful when it serves others.
- Fitness is not about perfection; it is about progress.
- Stronger communities are built through shared responsibility.
These lessons continue to shape how I view healthcare, public health, rehabilitation, and community leadership.
Gratitude and Continuing Purpose
I remain grateful to the Michigan Fitness Foundation for the opportunity to represent this important initiative and to stand alongside others who shared a passion for improving the health of communities.
The experience strengthened my belief that public health, physical therapy, and community engagement are deeply connected. Each plays an important role in helping people live healthier, more active, and more fulfilling lives.
Looking Ahead
As I continue my professional journey, I remain committed to advancing healthcare, supporting community wellness, and inspiring others to lead healthier, more active lives.
The mission of fitness and preventive health remains as important today as it was during that memorable experience in 2014.
Health is not built in a single moment. It is built through daily choices, consistent effort, and the willingness to encourage others along the way.
“Fitness is not about being the fastest or the strongest. It is about choosing each day to become a healthier version of yourself — and inspiring others to do the same.”
